17k up hill in 39 degrees...that's hard core RC, rather you than me mate. Did you run both runs in the one day?
I think next Saturday most of us are running down at Wungong...you are of course more than welcome to join us if you have the time.

RC The impact forces of running on road is so much greater. For example I ran ~50K sat with perhaps 15k on paths and roads. My kness are stilll a little sore which I haven't really experienced with either 100 mile trail or a similar weekly milage of soft surface running. Rob I'm a little confused with what happpens at Mundaring. I thought the bridal trail goes to Mundaring whereas the Kep starts at the weir 7k away. I'd like to perhaps check out the first 30-40k closer to the date. I'm actuallly considering running up from Jarrahdale and meeting you at Mundaring though. So I'd only be doing the 75K option, (plus 100k to the start!)

Rob I ran the last 32K to Northam during winter. An excellent run actually including finishing in the dark. The place where I think we should finish is the motel. About 500m down the main rd on the left.

Dave...and I thought Christian had a problem at 6 Inch?? 175km, that is huge.
A quick explanation. The race starts at the Weir, and follows the Kep Track to Mundaring township. There the 100km runners turn West along the Heritage Trail down to Swan View, and then through John Forrest to Mt Helena, to hook up with the Kep track once again.
The 75km runners at Mundaring township turn north east and continue on the Kep track to Mt Helena and beyond.
I'll have a look at the Motel the next time I'm in Northam.

A few things to repy to here..
rodb2, no I did the runs on different days. I am a bit limited for options and often the only really convenient time to run is between 1200 and 1400. If it's hot too bad. I am really keen to make sure I don't let myself down in the preparation for this event as I do not want a DNF. Thanks also for the invite to the Wungong run - I would like to join you but I just can't afford the transit time this Saturday as I have a short shift change around and may only end up doing the trail version of the Darlington half on Saturday. Things should be back to normal after that and I will be able to make any runs on the next 4-5 Saturdays.
dave - firstly 175km is insane.
Secondly as long as you get to the start point of the Kep it's pretty easy to follow except a couple of points where tracks/ carparks/ sliproads meet. While you aren't likely to get seriously lost it can slow you down or just give you the sh!ts. It's also handy to at least be familiar with the point where we will turn East in my opinion. I prefer peace of mind when mistakes mean I run further. And yeah I definitely prefer running trails to road but I have since tried road running in the Mizuno flats and have found I can land forefoot on road now too which is great but I will try and do most of my km's on grass or trails.

Rob Has a start time been decided yet? RC I know the Munda Biddi well and this shares similar ground to the Kep early on. I know where exactly to turn east for exampl because this is a shared section of the Munda Biddi and Kep. I anticipate starting at 6pm and aiming to finish at 6am this could welll see me go through the weir around 5am or even enable me to run the whole 100k. I was anticipating running 25k to start of 100k or 225k overall. However now I know the course better if I arrive on time I could do both 100K course and with the overlap only run 193K. This seems much more do-able although I'd probably like a headstart so I can have brekky at HJ's in Mundaring. I was also thinking if the 100k runners have already run 30k I'd be better able to keep up. Plan B would mean they'd done 0-7k. We'll see how the run goes from Jarrahdale!!

Dave, start time is 7am for 100k runners, 10am for 75k runners. We'll wait for you at Mundaring as you run through the HJ drive through.

Gday Rob Finally had some time to check out your website. It looks great and with the trail people so keen on promotion I wonder if there would be much more effort needed to get this race up "officially". Sometimes in WA you are basically trying to set up a run for yourself and wonder if there will be enough runners interested to make it worthwhile to commit all the effort to formalize the thing but it seems the national trust is making things somewhat easier than the MB Foundation. As a current AURA meber you can apply for race insurance if approval is granted. I guess it comes down to whether you think it's worth the extra effort and cost to hopefully attract more runners. Either way I'm in and the website's telling me it's only 132 days to go!! Perhaps we can discuss the finish at our next trail run. Here's my thinking: Motel -Closer, easier naviagation, my mum's cousin work's ther could possibly ask for sponsorship or use of a function room?, we wil have use of cooking and showering facilities. Hotel- possible drunken yokels whilst we hang out wet and smelly in our "sexy" skins, can buy food and drink, no showering unless we have a room, do we need the extra distance?

Hi Dave
I don't mind the extra effort and cost, but I reckon it would be better to run this year as a bit of a trial, see what goes right and what goes wrong, and then fix it for next year and go for official status. If this becomes "official" the expectations of runners might be higher, and I don't need the pressure of that first up.
Yeah, let's have a chat re the finish line. The thing I like about the Pub is that it is more in Northam central, rather than the outskirts, and if people come out to have a look there are more facilities around. I see your points re facilities at the motel though.

Just wanted to give early notice of a recon run planned for Saturday 28 March. The run will be at night with headlamps from Bakers Hill to Northam, a distance of about 26km.
Planning to start at Bakers Hill at 6:45pm, to arrive in Northam by 8:45 – 9:15pm.
We’ll need to drop some cars at Northam, so if we meet at Bakers Hill at 5:45pm, that will give us an hour to get cars to Northam and back to the start.
Please let me know if you’re going to come along.

Just a reminder for the recon run from Bakers Hill to Northam this Saturday evening. Note the times have changed a bit to the previous advice because it would help to actualy run in darkness, and with this being the last day of daylight savings we should start the run at 7:45pm. So the times are now:
Planning to start at Bakers Hill at 7:45pm, to arrive in Northam by 9:45 – 10:15pm.
Meet at Bakers Hill at 6:45pm, that will give us an hour to get cars to Northam and back to the start.
Please let me know if you’re going to come along.

Sounds good, Rob. Any interest with people to overnight in the hills somewhere? I want to do the JF Cross Country Sunday morning and it doesn't make sense to drive all the way back to Wembley at midnight. There's a motel on the GE Hwy not too far east of JF park - I don't know it, just found it on the internet.

The Saturday night run from Bakers Hill to Northam went very well, other than us getting lost at Northam Tanks (still need to sort out the route through there), and Roy's fall. Running at night was certainly a very different experience.
Would certainly recommend doing this recon run before the race, if not at night, during the day.
I am certain we would have taken more wrong turns if I hadn' t of reconned this by car previously.

The bit near the tanks if I'm thinking of the same bit you just follow the fence to the right and then follow the single track. I had no idea at this point but then saw a glow in the bush and found the track. Running at night is great fun!
