I think my pack is 15L. I can carry up to 7-8kg in it so I'm sure that will be big enough. Chicken, What you scared to run for more than one day?

Short answer - Yes ;D Long answer - 1) not fit enough 2) got a youngun and another due at the end of March/ start of April 2009 so I cannot justify and don't like being away from home for too long at this stage. Believe me I would love to be able to run a 100km or more race. If I somehow do ok at the Kep then I may step up for something bigger. In the meantime my preparation is ahead of schedule - I have already finished reading Ultramarathon man ;D

Rubberchicken, That's a great start. I'm planning a pizza run this summer sometime. Hoping I can get Nathan off his healthy diet to run it with me. 30K- Pizza- 30K! That book destroyed my diet!!

Yeah I'm on my way. I really enjoyed the book and the most important part I got out of it was that I have to stop being a soft nutse and dedicate myself to the cause. My work and home situation has a few things which I thought made training difficult but when looking at how he found time to train I really don't have it bad at all. It is early days yet but I am off to a good start. Just have to train smart and not get myself injured.
In case you don't know I am making the conversion to barefoot or as close to barefoot as you can get ( Vibram 5 fingers ). The intial change made progress very slow ( kills the calves and hamstrings in my case ) but now I am able to up the distances and number of runs per week. Yeah I'm only going to get about 45km out of this week but if I can increase by the 10% a week I should be ok at least to finish the 75km by the 24th / 31st of May.
Don't think I will be up for the Pizza run any time soon but hope to do some of the recon runs next year.

C,mon Dave, 30k Pizza 30k is an insanely soft option, I mean it's only 60k. I would only consider poisoning my body with pizza for a 60k - Pizza - 60k to make it worthwhile.
Interesting to hear that the 5 fingers are tough on the calves/hammies, why do you think that is?

I believe it is how you have to run in them - feet land under hips, midfoot or forefoot landing etc. May not be an issue for you / for those with a good running technique but for me the change was drastic. I have never had great technique, and added to that I spent a significant time running when I was a lot heavier, wearing boots, carrying gear etc.
My previous style had me using primarily quads with relatively little use of the hamstrings or calves and footfall impact was high. Now it is the opposite and so far I am free of a lot of the issues that were stopping me from running ( knees and shinsplints ). In short for me it seems to work.

Ok, so we had a chat about the Kep Ultra in Dwellingup this morning, and the following was decided: 1) We're sticking to the May 31 date 2) We're running from Mundaring Weir to Northam, rather than the other way around. If no one has any objections, what I'd like to have is the 75km runners start 3 hours after the 100km runners, meaning that both groups get to Mt Helena at around the same time, and from there both groups will sort of be in sync, making providing support a lot easier. The way I'm feeling right now, another 55km on top of 45km seems like a very long way.

No problems this end. It's good to have the date settled. I will do the Mundaring to Mt Helena as part of a recon run to get some sort of idea on timings. Still waiting to find out if I can provide a support vehicle. Stay tuned.....

Date suits me better, allowing 2 weeks to recover from the 50k as opposed to 1

Over the holidays i took a drive out to Northam following the Kep Track (Photos of Track here: picasaweb.google.com.au/knoddie59/KepUltraPreview/photo#map). The official end of the Kep Track in Northam is at a place called Poole St Footbridge, which is just after the big Railway Bridge as you're coming into town, before the swimming pool. There aren't any facilities here at all, and it will be a cold, dark place for support crews to wait for competitors to roll in on a wet May night. I know the last thing I'll be looking for is another 1.5km to run, but I reckon it would be better if we finish in Northam itself, probably at the Avon Bridge Hotel. As it's the Foundation Day Long Weekend, I'll probably get a motel room there for the Sunday night anyways, so people will be able to have a shower when they're finished. What does everyone think?

God bless you! The photos and map are very helpful.
As for the extra 1.5km I'm not sure I'll be too happy about it at the time but I don't want to put the support crews out either. It certainly would be nice to have some sort of facilities at the end where support crews and early finishers can rest and feed etc

that superimposing of the track photos over the map looks very cool. Got a good mental image of the kep track with all the photos put them on slideshow...I'm now tempted to consider the 75km...silly me! If I made it through the 40 miler, I might have to do it, i mean whats an extra 11km... so according to the website www.kepultra.com/especially www.kepultra.com/news.htmits locked in for 31st may with a finish at Northam at this stage

If you haven't already seen the weekend long run thread, we are doing a recon run on the course this Saturday morning 10 January from Mundaring Weir to Pechey Road Swan View, which should be about 26 or 27km. Some people will be leaving their car at Pechey Road, and then will travel to Mundaring Weir with others...those leaving their car at Mundaring Weir will then get a lift back afterwards.
The plan is to meet at Pechey Road at 5:45am, and start the run from the Mundaring Weir Hall at 6am.
Let us know if you're planning on coming.

Wasn't sure if you wanted this here or in the long run section but as it pertains to the Kep I guess here will do. I have done a couple of short runs ( approx 17 km, long for me at present, short for some of you )on sections of the Kep and have a few notes observations.
Fistly I did a 17.5km ( out and return ) section from Bellevue up the hill and am now real glad I didn't go for the 100km option. Found it really hard going but in my defense I did go at 1300 hours on a 39 degree day. Uphill really sapped my energy and I went through a lot of water. Coming down was much nicer obviously but I got some blisters in the 5 Fingers.
Second run was 17km out and back from just west of Mundaring to the Weir. Found the track a bit tricky to follow where there are multiple track junctions. Took a wrong turn on the way to the Weir and when I got to what I now know is the start I just kept on running ( I was hoping for some sort of sign ). It was a lot easier following the track from the Weir and now having checked the photos ( thanks rod ) the start point seems pretty obvious. I ran this in the evening and my pace on the return was pretty quick for me.
Oh and after getting blisters and a few stone bruises in the 5 Fingers I decided to give the Mizuno flats a go on the track and these worked a treat. Seems I can run flats on trails but not road. Go figure
Lastly I plan on doing some time on the track this Saturday but will keep you posted on details in case anyone cares to join me
