Jason who is the runner I was referring to re leave etc on 24 May has let me know he is flexible, and can run the weekend after if people want to change. I'm happy either way, and if it suits Dave better then I'm happy in moving it. Nathan would probably also appreciate another week's recovery from the 24 hour I would say. So unless I hear any different in the next few days, we'll make it May 31.

Sorry Rob but I'd really like the 24th now. WAFL fixtures came out and that is the state game weekend. Of course there's always the chance that I'd umpire the state game and then I'd be a late withdrawal.

Well, 24th is fine for me, It will all depend on how I pull up but if I'm too sore then I guess you guys will have a support crew for the race

Howdy all! Rubberchicken / Jason here, my account got cleared a little while ago so I thought I would stop by and say G'day. As rodb2 has said I will be on leave on the 24th and I have a rostered day off on the 31st if I am back at work ( shiftworker ) so any date is fine by me.
Really looking forward to giving this a go. I may well have bitten off more than I can chew but what the hey, I'll give it a shot. I am picking up the training and hopefully will be able to get a few of the recon runs in, meet up with a few of you and get a few pointers (so far I am in the dark a bit as how to manage hydration / salts / food etc on the run).

Let's chat about the date at 6 Inch, and see what works best.
Jason...I'm with you with the biting off more than you can chew. I'll be chewing like crazy on race day.

Hi all, just after a bit of advice in regards to gear for this event. I found the Salomon Revo Raid 15 ( inc bladder ) and the Revo Raid 20 for $100 including shipping ( not sure if I can mention site name but I'm guessing a few of you know it ). I will get one of them but not sure which. Would the 15 be big enough? I think I would like the fit better but am unsure how much food and cargo space I will need.
What packs / gear do you all intend to use?

Rubberchicken,
I have a Revo Raid 20 and will probably be using it for this run. Water won't be an issue as refill points are fairly regular but assuming their will be no support crew then we'll need to carry all supplies from the start, which will mean a larger pack. I reckon you'd be ok with the 15 as the 20 will probably have too much room - depending on what you want to carry. You'll probably need to carry food/gels, wet weather jacket, maps, phone, vaseline (chaffing), sunscreen, small first aid kit and probably a few other things, which should all fit into a 15ltr pack. The biggest variable I see is how much food you'll need, you'll need to practise this before hand and you'll get an idea of how much you will eat and therefore how much you'll need to carry. The only other pack I have is a Nathan HPL#20, a racing pack which is too small for a self-supporting 100k.
Think about what you want the pack for, do you want it for 100k races such as this or things like overnight runs. The reason I ask is that when I bought my RR 20 I got it so I could go on overnight runs and carry sleeping back, gas bottle/stove and food etc (All of which are pretty small) but they fit into the pack (albeit a tigth squeeze). If you're not interested in any overnighters or anything longer than 100k then the 15 would be ideal. Does the 15 have padded waist straps with pockets?
Hope it helps
Nate

Thanks for the reply Nathan. At this stage I am just aiming to do the 75km Kep, and am also keen for the 2009 Six Inch Trail. 100km races are out of the question at this stage but if but if the Kep is good to me maybe I will consider it . I was hoping to use whichever pack I purchase for both events and understand the Six Inch will require me to carry a lot more water.
The 15 doesn't have the padded waist straps. I like the idea of the pockets on the 20 but not keen if it brings too much extra heat load. Also I like packs to ride up high - not so keen with bands around the waist normally. It sure would be handy to compare the packs side by side and try them on I guess.
I am guessing the 20 gives me much more versatility.
Oh and I read on coolrunning that someone had an issue with the Platypus bladder, what have you got in your 20?

I just use an el-cheapo bladder from the local outdoor shop.
Sounds like the 15 would be the better buy. 6-Inch you'll need more water but it's only 46k (as opposed to 75k) with a drink stop at half way and possibly others as well so not really an issue.

rubberchicken - I've just purchased the Ultimate Direction packs - the 20l and 34l ones. Would be something else you could look at, I suppose - but sounds like Nathan's steering you in the right direction for what you need. Too bad you aren't coming to Six Inch this year, as a few of us were talking about bringing our larger packs just to do show-and-tell around the campsite - Sal and Steve have some Osprey and also just bought the Raids, as I recall.
It's hard to see gear up close in Perth, so Six Inch is a good chance for all of us to show and compare what we've got on hand, I think!

Had a look at the UD packs and have read they are hard to beat. Pity the exchange rate is not so good now, hence I think the Salomon packs are a bargain for me (given I am yet to do an ultra). Besisdes not being ready for the Six Inch this year it also falls on my daughters 2nd birthday. Sounds like a great idea to compare gear. It seems like the only way to try before you buy
