Spoke to him after the race and he couldn't believe it. Before the race he rated himself a 50% chance of getting 210k. I remember last year at the 100 miler I thought he'd have a bad race given recent form and training but then he pulled out a 20:30. I said to Rob afterwards that I'd never bet against him again. I stand by my previous statement - a phenomenal natural talent!!

I thought as long as he recovered ok from the 12 hour in time, that 118k suggested there was potentially something bigtime ahead in the 24 hour...223km is a bit further than we all expected though...Was just hoping he would get past 200-210km...but hes done that and a whole lot more...
but now I think that might rank him 3rd on the all-time best west australians with only Mick Francis on 231km and Joe Record in a freaky 230km UK effort in 1979 ahead of him...top 25-30 on the alltime AuRA australian list too, so its a bit of a once in a decade type performance, although I have a feeling there may be more to come...i.e. the peak of peaks may not yet have been reached, only God and maybe Dave knows that...
Phenomenal is very appropriate descriptor! Hopefully Emu is the new favourite word for the next year or so...
makes us wonder what someone who did 110km at the 12 hour race might be capable of later on down the track...

He's 3rd all time in WA Aura rankings and I know he can go further - 24hr races seem to require experience to achieve better results. Look at Martin Fryer who was a solid 230 runner for 2-3 years and then all of a sudden broke through in 2008 and now is a 250k+ runner. The more of these Dave does (if he wants to that is) the better he'll become. The big difference is between running them and racing them. We both raced during the 12hr and Dave was able to race again at the 24hr hence the big total.
Funny thing is that he despite the 223k he is still only 5th in the last 12 months and the emus only have 6 places. Mick will be looking to grab the 6th spot at the nationals and if someone else comes out of the woodwork then he may miss out. That assumes everyone will go to the worlds next year. But here's hoping that our Dave gets selected, and has a chance to do something we only dream about.

for sure! i hope he can land that Emus spot, but its a real competition at the moment....guessing australians will be pretty competitive at world level too... Did you read the muscle breakdown report of Phibes on coolrunning thread...scary stuff that... be very interesting to see what develops in the next year or two...if this ultra chase continues!
