when I was at school, one of my mates (and my main rival in school crosscountry races) used to do the 4k cross country on gravel trails near wungong gorge barefoot, see trailblazer777.net/gorgephoto.htmltrailblazer777.net/hikewungong.html but he was a pretty tough dude, had several belts in karate, and a high pain tolerance threshold... barefoot South African Olympian Zola Budd springs to mind of course see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zola_Buddand I remember when I racing in the sydney 2000 olympics 20km trailblazer777.net/stadiumaustralia.htmlwww.athletics.com.au/history/aust_walk/rw2000.htmwalk trial one of the malaysians I think their name was Thirukumaran Balaysendaram did the 20k walk with something like a leaf covering under their foot, and no shoes...there was a photo in a sydney newspaper I think...I think it makes a lot of sense (barefoot running and in particular reducing heel strike), but many of us would have to toughen up our feet considerably to get used to it... pity about all the evil illusionary i mean evolutionary rubbish, but still a very interesting topic... Clearly a good thesis topic for any sportsscience/exercise science/human movement/sports medicine students out there...guess that could even be me one day, if I go back do the pracs get my sports science bachelors... Wonder where Nike Frees, track spikes (brief mention of that in article) and stuff like that comes into this...
