OK I'll try to generate some discussion. Whats your favourite WA race & why? Mine would have to be the King of the Mountain. I love everything about it - the scenery, the creek crossings, the ups & downs, no traffic until the last km, and a nice hot cuppa waiting at the end.

I would also like to hear what others fav races are, I enjoyed the king of the mountain , but the one im looking forward to is the John forest (old faithful ) I did it last year but managed to go the wrong way, but the uphill downhill, cross rocks and all that makes it pass really quick, just hope i go the right way this year.

I was going to say the Bunbury 6hr race - but I understand it's just been cancelled. *sigh* Then there was the Meelup Hills Challenge - but it died too. *sob* The 23.5k Northampton to Horrocks Beach run would have to be close to the top though - and it's still going (I hope...). I like one way races - you get a sense of going somewhere - and the scenery on this one is great. Similarly scenic and unidirectional is the Bunbury Runners Club Gnome race half marathon from Dardanup to 'Gnomesville'.
For the sheer exhiliration though it's really hard to beat the Sunset Challenge on Cable Beach (from the surf club to Gantheaume Point and back),
And if we were to extend this thread just a little to favourite running route, then no question about it: the Cape to Cape Track from Leeuwin Lighthouse to Naturaliste Lighthouse.

Andrew, any news on the proposed ultra run along the Cape to Cape track? Sounds awesome.

Well i don't know about everyone else but i truly think that the Rottnest Marathon has to be one of the best run events in WA. The scenery is great, the bagpipes on the hill seem to add something extremely special to the event and the dollar girls do an exceptional job of providing entertainment on each of the laps. When you finish, you not only get a medal, but a picture of yourself crossing the finish line, as well as a certificate, all for $20...has to be one of the bargains of marathon running.

Hi, Suzy - same name, different board! No real progress on the race - but I haven't forgotten it either. It's such a brilliant course, the race just has to happen. But, until it does...if anyone is interested in joining me I'll be running the top half (Naturaliste Lighthouse to Margaret River) on the 5th or 6th of March (I'm leaving it open in case anyone else has a preference). I'll organise the odd 'aid station' (OK, someone with a car and an esky) to provide cold refills and snacks at a few points down the track - it should be fun, in a sort of fat ass style. Later in the year I'll do the bottom half (Margaret River to Leeuwin Lighthouse) in much the same way and then try to put it all together (but the other way round - South to North) for some time in April 2006. So far I have in principle agreement from various stakeholders in the Track, and insurance looks like it will be OK - so provided I can work out how to prevent competitors getting lost, it might just happen.
In the meantime - anyone up for a nice long run on the March long week-end? Nothing too fast, but epic proportions and maybe just the start of a legend.

Chris: Rotto certainly right up there as one of the best Runners World Mag also recommended it....so a few east coast Australians and NZ's might come visit...there was some from UK and USA last year...? I did a webpage on my run there last year; www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/runrottomara04.html Hope to get back and get a few more photos of the scenery this year...
Andrew: Cape to Cape awesome scenery there!, one of the guys I have run with a few times, did a 3.09 in his first marathon, did some of the Cape to Cape last year, I will pass on the word re the 5th/6th March&April.
Might even come myself if I can find the time etc King of Mountain sounds great! been up some of the stirling ranges peaks a few times......Freo half marathon is nice view of the ocean& ships out to sea most of the way, also the Perth marathon along the SWAN is good...coming down the last hill of the city to surf...my faves so far, also at the end of the central park stairclimb race at the summit of the tallest building in perth Lest we Forget 8k in Kings park has some good views down to the Swan...

Oh another one; the DOLPHIN DASH 10k/5k Doddis Beach->Halls Head->Blue Bay->Canals->Bridge alongside Mandurah Estuary...might even see the dolphins swimming up the estuary also...got lost a few times on the course last year.......
:DI'd like to see a Mandurah Marathon including parts of the dolphin dash the new bridge and then maybe down through Falcon to Dawesville Cut, or perhaps start at the Cut.....
constr. crit.; Freo half and Bridges should have some portaloos like the city to surf has.... Music now playing: Demonhunter Not Ready to Die

Andrew Do a fair amount of running on the northern section of the C2C while freeloading over hols. Agree that this route could become a classic ultra and wish you well in getting it off the ground. Unfortunately cant do March - small matter of an appointment in Cape Town at easter to take precedence. However, may be easily persuaded for the southern section later in the year.

Talking of the John Forrest Race (well, Nel mentioned it above) - I presume this is the cross country and not the 40 miler ... as I recall it last year, it's pretty hard to make a wrong turn in the latter. Anyhow, can someone tell me about the handicap system for the cross country? I'm not a WAMC member, so I guess that means I'm on scratch...or something like that. And is it really that easy to get lost on the ocurse? I might give this one a go this year. Any other starters? - AndrewC

Hi Andrew I'm quite keen to come for a run with you. I'll probably have footy umpiring the day before so Sunday would be much better for me. I have run most of this section before. 72k over two days. I have a 3 hour planned for that weekend I don't know how I'd go for 60ish!

DaveK -
Great! Sunday (6 March) is fine by me. How about a 6am start at Naturaliste lighthouse? I'll organise the aid vehicle (cold drinks and food) to meet us at Wyadup Point and Cowaramup Bay - and also to meet us at Prevelly to bring us home. We should probably try to catch up the day before to discuss the timing for the aid stations, etc. Will you be down here on the Saturday evening?
Any other starters? It's for fun - it's not a race...yet! So come and join us on the track.

Hi Andrew 6am Sunday sounds good. I'm starting my taper in anticipation. I suppose it would be best to come down Saturday night but I live in Mandurah so I could leave at 4am and have a hearty breakfast before hand. I'd like to make some arrangements as far as where to leave my car etc. Give me a call 9535 1000 and we'll discuss arrangements. Dave K

DaveK -
Unfortunately I've run in to a slight ITB problem...physio thinks I may be OK by Sunday week, but I'd like to get a few pain-free runs under my belt in the next 4 or 5 days. Sorry if this stuffs up your taper - but I'll let you know as soon as I'm on two good legs. If need be, are you happy to defer by a week? (I'll try my hardest to make that an academic question).
Cheers

Andrew, re John Forrest XC, which I haven't run for a few years, its reasonably well marked but the potential for getting lost is always there. Best to try to keep someone in sight the whole way & follow them! If you're not a WAMC member then you start from scratch with the really fast guys. Hope your ITB clears up soon. I may be a starter at John Forrest. Pretty unfit at the moment but it would be good to get out there again. Might see you there.
