Some tough trails in the metro area where short races could be held: Armadale - Settlers Common, Bungendore Park Bickley Hamilton Hill - Manning Park Greenmount - Goat Farm Gooseberry Hill Kalamunda - National Park, Lions Lookout trail, Jorgensen Park (not the WA Aths X-C route, but smaller, rougher trails) Lesmurdie - Lions Lookout trail. John Forrest NP
I haven't included Reabold 'cause they've closed all the sand tracks and limestoned the rest - it's more of a highway than a trail.
Slightly further afield are Walyunga, Mundaring and Gooralong. Down South a great route would be Dunsborough to Meelup (or to the Lighthouse if you want to make it about 16km with 1km along the sand at Bunker and a nice hill at the end). Lots of sections of the Bibbulmun or Cape to Cape would be feasible for 5-15km races.

Simmo Would you be interested in a 11K support race instead. I just lost a more detailed message about this issue which I have also floated on coolrunning. I'll start a poll and make a final decision this week.

Another good one to add to your list is Paruna Sanctuary - from the AWC website:
"Paruna sanctuary is located in the Avon Valley east of Perth, and was established by AWC in 1998 to create a 2,000 ha wildlife corridor between two regionally significant National Parks: Walyunga National Park to the southwest and Avon Valley National Park to the northeast."
"Numbat Track (12 km, 6 – 9 hours, medium-to-hard rating) This solid day walk also incorporates parts of the Quenda and Possum trails. It provides a wonderful challenge to experienced walkers, and will reward them with a wide variety of natural features:- From creek lines to granite outcrops and wildflower displays, to open powderbark forest. This trail is only suitable for very fit bushwalkers, rogainers and those involved in endurance sport preparation."
Sounds perfect

I'm not sure how the mountain bike clubs would feel about sharing the trails but they have several good ones eg Jarrahdale, Turner Hill, Marrinup.

Sandy tracks through Kings Park, Trigg Bushland Reserve, Craigie Bushland, Hepburn Hieghts and Pinaroo Valley. Short but still trails all easy to get to with a little imagination all have good and varied routes.

I think we all need to remember that just because DEC has approved 1 trail race doesn't mean the floodgates have been opened for every trail in the state.

Well I also think this is great news. It feels like more of and event now and hopefully will get a much bigger draw and all the excitement and enthusiasm that goes with it. I guess it may be similar to marathons in this regard because lets face it you can go out and attempt a marathon any time you like but you when you have an official event all of a sudden people get excited, people start coming out of the woodwork to attend, travel interstate etc etc. I also believe it will be another welcome addition to the now growing ultra calender here in the West.
Congrats to all who got this one approved.

Nathan, I don't think anyone is suggesting this, they are just pointing out that Bold Park is not the only "trail" course in Perth.

the 11k is ahead by 1 vote at this stage..to be honest I reckon probably have both 11k and 23k is the way to go, although maybe have to wait a few years.. more races = more organisational work...but more people involved hopefully means more helpers...or does it?? totally agree...Bold park is not the only trails in Perth...most suburbs have some nearby if you look hard enough...and most of us wont be seeking government approval to do a training run on them...although for a full blown formal race series you probably would have to... I'like the idea of some regular short trail races though, even just 3 or 4 a year for distances in the region of 7km to 25km would be good...maybe even a trail run series a bit like the way the novice triathlon series works..... In melbourne there is a street orienteering type midweek run series or something like that... Then there is the Run "The Tan" series also in melbourne...just a flat dirt track though, not a technical trail or anything... The Tan is a 3.8km lap...I ran it the last 2 times I was in Melbourne... while I am more of a road runner than a trail runner, in recent years I have been corrupted to the dirt side (as Bernadette terms it) a lot...and as i have mentioned before in previous years, we should look to interstate and international trail running groups, to see what has worked for them for ideas...as well as looking in our own experiences, environments... e.g. runtrails.org/articles/?page_id=2www.facebook.com/pages/TRAQ-Trail-Running-Association-of-Queensland/12813653591interesting that the interstate entrants to 6 inch last year were Queenslanders... then there is a certain canadian group... members.fotki.com/trailtrash/about/with brilliant quotes like; Trailtrash Philosophy: When the mountains won't come to you, Uncivilize yourself… Get down and dirty with your closest friends, Life without adventure would just be golf; Every great trip has its ups and downs; You're never lost if you're where you want to be. Trailtrash Famous Last Words: It’s totally runable. We fear no frogs! According to the map…. This looks familiar.… It should be safe…. Let's make it a loop! If I'm not back by..... Is that the sound of a helicopter? there are heaps of trail races out there worth seeing how they do things

It would appear a can of worms has been inadvertently open and the "Official" integrity of 6" has been put under threat.
I had intended running the race regardless of it's status and had booked and paid two nights accommodation in a chalet at the Caravan Park when the event was still "Fatass" and was very much looking forward to it. Sal had hoped to be sufficiently recovered from injury to run the race in it's entirety also, failing that she would run the proposed 23km option that was being suggested as a possibility. Alas this is now not to be for what ever reason.
In email communication with one of the organizing committee she mentioned that as she didn't feel quite ready for the whole event she was planning on joining me at the halfway point and running the rest with me. Open, one can of "Pacing Worms". I have to make it quite clear at this stage that I have neither the ability or expectation of challenging the leaders and were I to do so with or without the aid of Sals or Gebrselassies pacing for that matter, I would submit myself to the mercy of the race committee and accept that yes I was indeed a very naughty boy and probably full of some very good and yet to be invented drugs. It was suggested that Sal be registered as an official pacer?
So to avoid tarnishing the yet unblemished "Official" reputation of the 6" Trail Ultra it is probably best that Sal and I run elsewhere in Dwellingup next weekend. An interesting thought comes to mind: Could an entrant in the 11km event be deemed to be pacing a full course runner should the 11km runner start as the 46km runner comes into the 11km start area? Also whats the Committee's opinion on motorbike recon's on the track?
In a quandary,
Stevo
PS Bernadette I found a Carboshot wrapper on the trail on Saturday, I pick it up and sent it off for DNA analysis. The report was inconclusive. MTB Rider or trail irregular runner was their best guess.

Steve
I'd certainly be very disappointed if you and Sal weren't to run in the race due to such a technicality.
I can see the point in large/championship races with significant prize money and where the person being 'paced' is at the lead end of the pack. Six Inch certainly isn't that type of race (and perhaps hopefully never will be) from my perspective.
I ran the WAMC Freo HM as a pacer of sorts this year, without having entered - mainly due to their new rule of not letting you enter on the day of the race - perhaps if they knew, my running mate would have been disqualified.

TB and Epi,
I thank you for your comments but alas sad and disappointed you must be. The decision has been made albeit it with heavy heart as Sal and I were very much looking forward to the run and I in particular had trained quite hard, without I might add the aid of pacing or drugs. Never mind it's miles in the bank for Libya.
Some good has come out of our decision though. The Dwellingup Chalets and Caravan Park were quite happy to get the Chalet free'd up as the 6" Ultra Trail Marathon Ethics and Appeals Committee needed the extra bed space for their Logistics and Legal Advisory teams. Also our dogs were spared from a couple of nights in the Boarding Kennels. Upon hearing the news Gemma was overjoyed and Buster just shrugged and licked the spot where his balls used to be.
Good luck to all who race next sunday. Lets not take ourselves too seriously, after all it's nearly Christmas. Enjoy whats left of The Dirt Side before it become to clean and sanitized.
Have fun kids and have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year, see you on the trails soon.....PS there'll be a Fatass run Sunday 20th December 2009 probably on the Bib in Mundaring 30-46km starting around 0530hrs if anyones keen....Viva La Anarchy...
