You still in for this trailblazer? I seem to recall you had a dodgy hamstring...
Anyway I'll be there despite not being where I want to be preparation wise although I guess I am not the only one saying this. My mindset is somewhere in the excited / crapping my pants area. I was quietly confident a month ago and have now moved on to "hopeful". It will be a great experience regardless of what happens.
See you folks soon ( I'll be sporting my CR singlet for the first time in an event ).
Take care y'all

Great the hear rubberchicken! You'll have a ball, I'll be a helper at the race so will be stationed on one of the road crossings or drink stations no doubt. I'll be sure to chuck in a 'Go Cool Runner!" when you go flying past.

Im entered, so probably will line up although the hammy is a big concern, and the lack of adequate prep doesnt fill me with any confidence, but even if I only last an hour or two three ,four etc, would like to be a part of this fantastic experience...will have the CR hat on of course...

I'll be sure to chuck in a 'Go Cool Runner!" when you go flying past. It should be easy to figure out who you are then, and it will remain to be seen how much flying I will be doing ;D Glad you will be there trailblazer. I can sympathise with you on the injury front. I got plantar faciitis in the left foot, achilles tendonitis in the right but they are not too bad at the moment. One advantage of not getting too many km's recently is that they have had time to recover a fair bit before the race. I am hoping to ease into it and get through without any major issues

Kathys sensational pics @ picasaweb.google.com.au/notaneggfli...L7NwNHv2oqNrwE#Well done Rob! I thought you looked like you had the goods when I saw yourself, and soon after Roy at 46k...Massive Congratulations Michael Baldock won in 5.15-5.17... only 32km for me today, I just wasn't up for it, but on the positive side, the hammy behaved itself, pretty well, and after an early twinge the ankle was good too, and I had heaps of fun, and enjoyed RACING again with some good splits for the first 16-20km...I hit 7km in 33.10 and 14km in 71min compared to 35 and 70min last year... keen to see how everyone went, (headed for home to be with the wife and kid) and see the pics! My race report @ runmara2005blog.blogspot.com/2009/0...ce-but-fun.html

Michael won in 5:17, about 4 runners around 5:30 (or sub). Christine Patterson won the womens with 6:07 and Bernadette came 2nd with about 6:24??
Rob, Roy, Rubberchicken all had great runs and Dave came in just ahead of RC after walking for 3 hrs. It was hard to watch you guys race after doing this one the last 2 years - especially with a fairly slow winning time, which I would have been confident getting close to.
The Best part for me was seeing so many people knocking off their longest run ever, I remember what that's like and all I can say is ENJOY THE FEELING. You've earnt it!!!!!
Well Done

Well, I had a bit of an ugly race and guess I've been off quietly tending to my wounds. A niggling tight spot in the IT for the past few weeks turned out to be more than a niggling tight spot on race day. Never felt the IT itself, but boy oh boy did I feel my kneecap tracking out of alignment for about 25 kms! Shocking pain that came in bursts with some short reprieves (Rubberchicken, now you know why I wasn't very chatty when we passed each other - just focused on pain management). Before that, it was a back ache, then a bit of nausea. If I remember right the first 14 kms of the race were pretty good though My average pace went from 5.33 for the first 39k to 6.35 or so for the last 25k. But despite my race falling apart at the seams, I learned a lot to help me with my 100k event in Canada in May. And I was inspired by seeing others (like Dave) sticking with it, too. The support of the volunteers was amazing (and I don't just mean their upper body strength holding up lollipops!) One thing I had confirmed in that race, for sure, is that you never know the cards you'll be dealt on race day. Prep as well as possible, but there's still an element of unknown. I used to look at race results of races I wasn't in and think - like Nathan mentioned - how I might have placed well, and such. Now I appreciate even more how easy it is to have a crap day. I'm just glad that my 'tough' race came after I had a few really good ultras under my belt. If that had been my first, I can't see that I would have wanted to keep up the sport!

Hi all. Still on a bit of a high after this one.
Bernadette, I understand totally. I made mention over at CR how I found it really interesting how different the whole event was for everyone and how everyone has their different challenges at different times. As you would have noted I had major cramp issues from about the 47 - 52km marks but lucky for me I dumped a fair amount of sodium the last time we passed the start and that kicked in a bit before the last turn around. As you mentioned Dave was steaming along but lucked out but still toughed it out for the finish. You got problems later on and I believe Rob had some issues towards the end.
I also have learned a lot, particularly because of the fact I have hydration issues, and therefore electrolyte issues. I have a much better idea on fuelling and what I can stomach at different times. Also as you say, it depends on the cards you were dealt on the day. My preperation could have been better, but I got the good cards on the day.
I am really looking forward now to my next ultra ( Kep ). Is this the start of my descent into madness I wonder?
Oh and an awesome event all round. Will be doing this next year, and my goal is going for a sub 6 hour finish

It's good to read about your racing high, RC. I know the feeling and it's nice to remember that right now as I'm still limping about! It was great to see you persevering on your 'forced march' during the leg cramp section of your race (your forced march was pretty fast! A good thing to have for ultras). And it was great to see that smile on your face when the cramps were gone and you could run again (leaving me in your red dust)! I still have some unfinished business with that race for next year (the sub 6 hr) - if I can psych myself up for it....couldn't we move it to the Munda Biddi somewhere?? A nice point-to-point??
