Kristin - very funny how you and I, being from N America, have that intimidation of the snakes. There is a good healthy fear here among the Oz, but most people are a little more laid back about it than you and I probably would be at first. It's what you're used to - I ran with bear spray at home, regularly ran through the tracks of grizzlies in the snow, and occasionally ran with a stick (when alone at night) for the cougars. You tell most Oz about bears and they have the same attitude you and I would have about snakes.
I've been seeing a number of tiger snakes now that spring is here and I live on a marshy lake, where they like to be. Seeing their habits and movements is giving me a better perspective of them.
If it would really make you more comfortable, I'd say stick a tensor bandage in your bag and know how to wrap the limb if bitten. Know what to do - don't run (spreads the venom through the lymphatic system faster); move as little as possible. Others will come along on the trail to you and can go for help. People have survived those bites, especially those who aren't kids or elderly (although hospitalization for anti-venom is a must). Also, looking at pics of the snakes to know what's a tiger, dugite, or python would help. Cuz a python you could run by, since they aren't poisonous at all (not that I think it would be easy to run by one!).
As for Dwellingup, several of us will be staying there on Saturday night and will be carpooling up to the start on Sunday morning. We'll definitely meet in the caravan park Saturday night and can make plans for the shuttle north.

good post as usual Bernadette...have to agree about the bears. I saw a bear when I was in Tennessee USA in 2001 (dont think it was a grizzly either), bears, cougars even snow I'd be pretty apprehensive about cos it aint something Im used to...
I deal with snakes and spiders most days with my meter reading, but even so I prefer to stay away from running around lakes now with all the tiger snakes there, which in a lot of ways is the most dangerous snake in australia although the death adder and Taipans (especially the one in very remote south western queensland) (no Taipans at all in the wild in perth thankfully), plus King Browns are pretty bad in a lot of ways. Dugites/Gwadars/Brown snake needs to be taken seriously to. You have about 1-4 hours I think to get treatment. So far I have never been bitten, although I had some near misses with Tiger snakes around Lake Joondalup, and many times at work, eg Lake Karrinyup, Herdsman Lake. Swanbourne near the SAS base. , plus as a kid dugites in Mullewa. saw a snake on Ellen Peak, once, plus a python onn Mt Trio, and Tiger snakes near the Cape to Cape track/Margeret River down south.
I found a good university of sydney snake link @ http://www.usyd.edu.au/anaes/venom/snakebite.html I have also noted down phone numbers of Murray District Hospital in Pinjarra, Armadale Hospital Royal Perth Hospital and Armadale reptile Centre just in case they prove handy, on the 5% chance they are needed. In the very unlikely event someone is bitten, most likely area would be calf or ankle, you bandage the area firmly, and then bandage up that leg to the groin to stop/reduce flow of venom around the body, totally minimise movement and go direct to hospital to get anti-venom...so carrying a bandage with you isd a good idea...otherwise I'd rip my shirt off and use that if it was me and I didnt have a bandage...or try and improvise with leaves, or maybe your socks and wait! for help to come...must not walk as it spreads the venom...
Got a phoner message from a bloke from Queensland today looks like him and his partner will be also running 6 inch, it is shaping up as a very big field this year both male and this year for the first time, a large number of females running! way to go people. If you are still thinkijng about it maybe its time to bite the bullet cos it should be a wonderful race this year, even more so than in the past... Good to see lots of people staying in Dwellingup area... a couple of weeks to go last chace to get a few long runs in, and/or taper...finetune fitness do some hills work...go for it all...see you there on the day...if not before!

I'm not too concerned about snakes, I think I've only ever seen one while I was running and that was on the cyclepath near Mullaloo beach. From what I've heard they prefer to get out of your way and will only bite if they are surprised or threatened. So make plenty of noise as you go and you should be OK.
As for bears, I did a camping tour of Canada and Alaska years ago and I don't think I slept at all the first few nights for fear that bears would attack the tent! As you say Bernadette and TB, its what you're used to.
A few questions about 6 Inch, sorry if they've been answered before but this thread is getting a bit lengthy to search through. 1. What is the start time? 2. How many water stations and where are they? 3. Anything else I need to know?
Thanks, Suzy

In over 6 years of living in the hills and running on tracks similar to 6 inch almost every day I have never seen a snake.
In 23 years of orienteering I have never seen a snake during competition and only once while training.
I've seen a few in Kings Park and around Reabold Hill though and we used to get dugites in the house (and the swimming pool) at Orange Grove when I was young.

Suzy; 1. start time is 0530 but briefing time is 0500, so we are asking evreyone to be there about 0500 for an 0530 start.
2. Water stations. I am unsure about this Dave and Nathan will have a better idea of this, and suspect it will not be finalised until a few days before the race, but should be at least one water station about 22km on Scarp rd . Possibly also at Whittakers (9km?), Del Park Rd (17km), and 35km mark intersection of Scarp Rd and Grey rd? I think.
Need to remind people though that in this race you are responsible for all your own drinks. LITTLE or more likely NO DRINKS WILL BE PROVIDED AT ANY TIME IN THIS RACE. If you want a refill at 22km you need to make arrangements before the day, with support or friends/partners, or
***with a designated drinks person who will carry it IN THEIR CAR FROM THE START of the race to the 22km, and possibly the 35km marks.*** It is mostly a ***self supported*** race!
3. Munda Biddi map and/or GPS highly recommended. Hydration pack or fuel belt highly recommended. One support person highly recommended. Might be worth taking a bandage for snakebite potential and/or a phone with coverage or at least put your name on Bernadettes emergency list, with an emergency contact person, if you havent already. More info will come to hand, and be posted online here or elsewhere online, or by email, as it comes to hand in the final week before the race.

Drinks will be available at the 22k mark (scarp road) although as tb said you'll need to provide your own before the race start. there will be a support car at the start so just clearly label and drinks/food and place in the appropriate vehicle.
I anticipate that the support car will make an initial stop at Wittakers 7/8k to provide some early drinks before going on to Scarp. Just beware that the first priority will be the 22k stop and the car must be there for the leading runners, shouldn't be too much of a problem but if you take longer than about 1:20 to get to the 8k mark you may miss it. The car will also move to the 35kish mark after the last runner has come through the 22k mark so although the leading runners might miss out on this stop, certainly those that are planning to be out there for 5hrs+ should get this support stop too.
Only a few weeks left to train and some will have begun a taper for the race. you aren't going to get a lot of endurance in the next 2 weeks so it's a good chance to get some sharpening done. Sharpening is basically fine tuning and essentially means getting some quicker runs in to enhance the aerobic base that you've built over the last few months. Be sure to incorporate hills and some heat acclimatisation as well to simulate race conditions (An easy way to do this is to start your long run an hour or 2 later so when you finish it will be warmer - just be careful as warm weather running involved a lot more planning to avoid troubles).
Happy training/tapering

Thanks for the info TB/Nate. I think I'll just load myself up and make like a camel. And its BYO picnic/BBQ at the end right? Starting my taper this week - always the best part.

Current likely Start List 1-Dave K (6 inch record holder, and 2.59 marathon this year, plus 6 foot completer, tough to beat) 2-Nathan (3.10 marathon this year a WA ultra legend now, and in his 4th 6 inch) 3- Mark B. (trailMaster, leading a "bus",and very experienced) 4-Epi (did pretty well last time should be faster this time after his 3.14 and 3.19 marathons this year) 5-Bernadette (Canadian trail legend) 6-Kristen D. (on holiday over from Colorado USA) 7-Kathy (ready for a new challenge, and being coached by a world class athlete should help) 8-Steve (major international exp ) 9-Sal (major international exp ) 10 Rob D. (completed both 6 inch recon runs this year) 11 Roy (completed bnoth 6 i9nch recon runs this year) 12 Isaak 13 Duffer 14 Julie Bull (running with Bernadette has to count for something) 15 Dave (Crogs) (also running in the Sahara desert soon) 16 Jason (Crogs Friend from Ireland) 17 John N. (from eastern australia, military? background) 18 Lyndie B.(from eastern australia, military? background) 19. Rob B. (3.09, 3.14 marathons this year) 20-Trailblazer (keen to saddle up for 3rd 6 inch but worried about risking ankle, lack of recent long runs, but with a 3.55 marathon this year might have a go) 21. Swiss bloke 1 22 Swiss bloke 2 23 Suzy(the first woman to attempt 6 inch, Suzy is a total legend in triathlon, running, orienteerin, adventure racing and so on. )
Runners at the moment from Australia, Canada, USA, Switzerland, and Ireland giving 6-Inch an international flavour, and also interstaters too. The current MAYBES; (in random order)
1-Victor? 2-Hunna? 3-Gunner? 4-coops? 5-Carol (from Colorado, USA) 6-Colin F? 7 Mick F? 8-Rebecca D. (womens record holder with 5.53 in 2007) 9 Tom? 10-Kaye? 11-Cherie? 12-hills group people perhaps? 13 Serena (maybe next year?) 14 others..e.g. maybe Lachie,Heinrich perhaps...
Also if you have a page on Facebook there is now a 6 Inch Trails Run "group" ..you can get to it through my facebook profile...or just email me with the email you use on facebook and I will make sure you get an invite...OR if you are logged into Facebook now try cut and pasting this Facebook URL; http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34190987803 I plan on revamping my 6 inch webpages this summer if I can find the time, and possibly some new better webpages about 6 inch being constructed in the near future by various people, hopefully not just me...
So looks like 20+ is the likely field size this time... only a few weeks to go until December 21st 0530 Whittakers Rd (cnr Del Park Rd), North Dandalup (near South West Hwy north east of Pinjarra.)... shaping up to be a very memorable 4th 6 inch!

Hey, everyone - don't panic if you "signed up" with me but TB doesn't have you there or vice versa (has you there after you told me you weren't running). I told him I'd update the forum at the end of this week, after trying to sort out a few of the "maybes" but I guess he got too excited to wait!
So, now, in order to prevent a slurry of posts and PMs of people wondering why they are or aren't on TB's list - here is the "official" list as it stands today:
Rob Donkersloot Bernadette Benson Kathy Garnett Nathan Fawkes Dave Croghan (aka crogs) Jason O’Hanlon-Ireland/see Croghan Sean Cooper (aka coops) Mark Bullard Kristin Doust (Colorado) Steve McGrath Sal Sanigar Dave Kennedy Suzy Thomas Roy Hart Jonathon Phillips (aka TB) Craig Dufty (aka duffer) Christian Marti- Swiss Ursula Marti- Swiss John from Qld Lyndie from Qld
I am awaiting reconfirmation/emerg contact info/last names/names wanted on mementos from the following two people, whom I have already sent PMs to: Isaak Dury Craig/epi
I would also like to get more info from our two Swiss runners, if possible (Dave's had contact and is on this) and from the two Qld runners (TB's had contact with them).

6 inch is a great race to help in preparing for the 6 foot race, and may help in qualifying for 6 foot if you are borderline...
By no means is this an official list its more about getting a clearer picture of who is coming and who isn't and hopefully encouraging a few of the people who are thinking "maybe I should" to get in touch and express their interest guven what is already starting to look like a very interesting diverse field from many parts of the world...Looking forward to seeing how it all goes...
Besides while we encourage people to let us know, if they manage to get to the start line on the day there is no reason why they can't race, it just makes it easier for bernadette and everyone involved to organise things better if we know in advance, which at the end of the day results in a better safer, more enjoyable race experience for all concerned especially with what looks like a field at least double the size of previous years...so we encourage people to let us know in advance as early as you can if you plan to run.
Sorry B yes its just getting very exciting with more than 20 people being likely starters from so many different parts of the world, thought it was worth updating things. I think you should add Craig B. (epi) and Rob B. to your list, as I am pretty sure they will both be doing it.
Suzy glad we can remove the question marks, and ultra running is the natural progression given your feats in the past.
1-Bernadette Benson 2-Kathy Garnett 3-Kristin Doust (Colorado) 4-Suzy Thomas 5-Sal Sanigar 6-Ursula Marti- Swiss 7-Lyndie from Qld
8-Dave Kennedy 9-Craig B. 10-Rob B. 11-Nathan Fawkes 12-Dave Croghan (aka crogs) 13-Jason O’Hanlon-Ireland/see Croghan 14-Sean Cooper (aka coops) 15-Mark Bullard 16-Steve McGrath 17-Jonathon Phillips (aka Trailblazer) 18-Craig Dufty (aka duffer) 19-Christian Marti- Swiss 20-John from Qld 21-Isaak Drury 22-Rob Donkersloot 23-Roy Hart
so that gives us about 22-23 highly likely starters, with quite possibly a vfew more...its going to be one awesome race!

Hi all, dear Dave, we are the 2 Swissrunners asking for a lift from swan valley. Well, we changed our plans and are staying in Dwellingup proper, so logistics won't be much of a problem anymore. Re the medals: I do not think Swiss custom is very choosy and will reject any kind of wood, so no special treatment required for us. Anyway, boomerangs sound fine. But you will have to come up for any damage done to windows and cars, when we start throwing boomerangs! Looking forward to some fun in the Australian bush. And good for a long run, as I am traing for the Trans Europe run. Bye the way, I have done the Transe Gaule with Kelvin Marshal - you may know him or heard of him - we have had some good hours together, but finally he was far too fast for me. Dave, we will call you the week before the race. Ursula @ Christian

It seems that many people will be staying in Dwellingup the night before. Is there any interest in getting together for a carbo dinner or maybe just a quiet Gatorade? Also does anyone want to share a chalet?
